Caught in a Rad Bromance
So, the holidays are over, well, except new years, which doesn't count cause I'm working. But, WOO! I've been all over, from San Fran to Houston, and I'm happy to be back relaxing in my weird little city. Though, don't be surprised if you see a Say Yes San Francisco popping up soon. I'm going to keep this short and sweet because I'm still fumbling to get back to normal after the ho-ho-ho-lidays. But if you are back in town and want to get back in the groove of this strange city, come check out Rad Bromance at Emo's tomorrow night at 9pm. Tickets are a measly $6, and hopefully your grandma sent you a few more bucks than that. If you haven't heard, Rad Bromance is the only ALL MALE LADY GAGA TRIBUTE BAND. So, how freakin' awesome is this going to be? They are all over the interwebs if you want to check them out.

Naughty or Nice?
Are you being naughty or nice today?
Nice:
Librarian's Night Out, 10:00pm, starts at none other than The Library. "Dress up as a classy, sexy in the old-fashioned way librarian. Pencil skirts, cardigans, and of course glasses. Gentlemen are welcome too! Break out those sweater vests and tweed jackets. We'll start out at The Library (of course), shushing those noisy patrons, and then wander through Sixth Street. As the night wears on, ties will be loosened, buns with be let down with a vixenish shake of the head, and maybe even (gasp!) the glasses will come off."
Naughty:
Santa Rampage! 7:30pm, Buford Tower, bring donations, dress like Santa, follow the Twitter, give gifts to children, and sing modified Christmas carols.
Or at least go downtown and sit on the sidelines to watch the fun unfold!

It's Here It's Here It's Finally Here!
They also sell healthy treats!
You can check out the Soup Peddler menu daily on the Twitter.
I got my order to go, and they put the spoon in the cup so it sticks out of the drink hole, which prevents spilling while you're speeding down Lamar to get home and eat it. I thought that was cute. The soup came with a little piece of bread that was warm and delicious and perfect for dipping. The soup is more on the chunky side than the creamy side, which I kind of like. I was digging the Head Cheerleader, fruity, not overwhelmingly sweet, and very fresh. The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable as well. Most of the soups are vegan or vegetarian which makes me happy. So get out there and enjoy some hot fresh soup and fresh squeezed juice in the 78704.

Bored today? Whaaaaat? Aren't you going to go see Harry Potter and the First Six Movies; 6 Movies, 2 Guys, 1 Hour, No Shame (Improvised/Sketch Harry Potter)? See it at 2pm at SVT (free!) and then again at 9pm at Hickory Street Grill. I'll be at the 2pm show, fo sho!
Are you already thinking about next weekend? I AM! It's going to be an Austin-action-packed weekend as usual. Hopefully, I'll be winning an award at the Austin Bleet-Up on December 3rd at 7pm. Click the link to RSVP! Lotsa free samples and bloggy fun. Dontcha know we're the number one city in the world for blogging? We're #1! We're #1!
Then I'm off to see The Duck Variations at Hyde Park Theatre at 10:30pm. The amazing folks at dystheatre have been rehearsing day and night for this one-night only jam-packed with talent performance that you don't want to miss. Seriously. You'll thank me later. Pay-whatcha-want, but keep in mind, they are raising money for their next production, True West.
Can't wait to see ya out and about!

Say Yes Stories and Adventures in A-Town
Oh my God guys! I have been ALL over this little city with the help of GoLocal and their scavenger hunt last Sunday. Thanks to Todd for the most bitchin' team shirts anyone could ask for.
But last week, we went to a Thrillist Preview Party for Pinballz Arcade, and I have to tell you guys, this place is AWESOME. I ran around squealing like a little girl at all the super sweet old school games they have. Ninja Turtles!! Sonic!! Crusin' USA! They even have competitive soccer pinball. Basically, if you played it as a kid, it's there. This place is huge, available for parties, and they have memberships available for discounts and competitions against other members. Doors open this Saturday, so I'll see you there!
Then we went to Mikado Ryotei for some sushi before a show. As you may know, I'm on the hunt for the best Philadelphia roll in Austin, and surprisingly this one took first place! For now. The pieces were huge and filled to the brim with flavor. The miso soup was so good I almost ordered another bowl. Oh and service? Yes. Fantastic. I can totally see this becoming a Saturday night ritual. A little pinball, a couple of philly rolls, sleep, repeat. And just FYI, here's my list so far: Mikado Ryotei, Kenichi, and Silhouette.
After we had enough mouth-watering food fun for one night, we headed over to SVT to check out the Saturday Night Special with Get-Up and Secondhand. It was amazing! Secondhand works in the style of Sarah Ruhl, the playwright who is responsible for my favorite play ever, Melancholy Play. I'll keep you posted on their upcoming shows!
So before you check out Pinballz this weekend, check out Sounds Like Fun! Competitive Charades, Part Duh at The Highball. Competitive Charades. Seriously. If you want to register your team or reserve space in the audience, email austinsoundslikefun@gmail.com. What will they think of next?
As you know, this blog is called Say Yes and it's not only a name but a lifestyle for me. It started out as an experiment, saying yes to every opportunity that presented itself, and the results were so freakin' amazing, I had to keep doing it and eventually share my enthusiasm and results. I've got lots of stories of how fun and how surprising it's been, but here's one story. I said yes to tons and tons of improv shows, and got to know a lot of the improvisers, like Tom Booker and Asaf Ronen. I found out about free classes, and took one at the Institution Theater. There I met Joel, who ended up being my scavenger hunt buddy, and holds awesome Dexter parties at his house on Sundays. But he's also putting on some shows. Harry Potter and the First Six Movies or 6 Movies, 2 Guys, 1 Hour, No Shame as it's come to be known will be blowing your mind this month and the next. Joel and Patrick will be dishing up everything you need to know about Harry Potter in just one hour, next weekend, 2pm, at SVT. So catch them before you see the next movie, because we all know you don't have time to re-read all the books. Even on your Kindle.
But what I'm trying to say is, everyone in Austin is awesome and does so many amazing things. I say yes to one show, meet one person, and find out they are involved in a world of other innovative, creative, never been done before things. It's mindblowing to know that kind of energy and creativity exists everywhere I go in this city. So Say Yes to a couple of things and see how it goes.
I liked this. Look forward to more say yes stories.
In the meantime, please consider voting for Say Yes Austin in the Austin Blogger Awards. I work hard on this blog for free and absolutely love it, but an award and a couple more fans wouldn't hurt :) SPREAD THE WORD! You can vote until midnight on the 24th. Do it now! Here are my choices:

Say Yes All The Way
Sorry Austin, I've been cheatin' on ya with the other love of my life, New York! But I'm glad to be back and am already jazzed about the upcoming events this month.
If you've been wondering where all the trailers have been disappearing to, it's likely they are setting up shop on Auditorium Shores for the first ever Gypsy Picnic Trailer Food Festival. It's tomorrow (or today, since I'm writing this at 3am) from 11am-8pm and it will be jam packed with $3 sample plates from your soon-to-be favorite trailers. It's free to attend, but bring some cash, your kids, and your Fidos. Do I have any recommendations? Oh yeah, just a few. The Jalopy for some sweet-ass sandwiches, Gourdough's and Banarchy for dessert, Izzoz Tacos and Holy Cacao for a snack, and a little coffee from Patika Coffee. Go ahead, partake. You can burn it off later as you take on Team Say Yes in the GoLocal Scavenger Hunt next week.
It's a city-wide scavenger hunt happening on the 14th of this month. It'll be an all day affair with sign-ups at 11, hunting from 12-4, and free feasting from 4-6. You need to preregister your team of 2-4 ahead of time, as they will only be accepting 300 people, so do it soon! The cost is $25 and the proceeds will support the Austin Zoo. I look forward to seeing you out there and winning first, second, or third prize!
If you've got an extra $125 saved up, check out Luminalia: An Evening of Celestial Delight at Umlauf Sculpture Garden, also this Sunday. Your ticket includes dinner, poetry, and dance with a 17th century Shakespearean feel. They even have special costumes for rent at Costume World. Should be a classy time!
In the meantime, don't forget to stock up on a winter wardrobe this Veteran's Day (that's the 11th) at Saver's. If you don't know by now, these sales are the BEST! The BEST, Jerry, the best! (By the way, he's coming to town!) Both stores will be participating and you can shop till you drop from 7am-9pm. I'm a size small. Wink. Don't forget to get a stamp card while you are there, so you can earn 30% off your next purchase just for donating or spending a few bucks.
Celebrity Autobiography also opens this week at the Long Center, so get your tickets now. The Tom Booker we all know and love from Confidence Men will be up on stage reading true excerpts from celebrity autobiographies, so it should be as awesome as a double rainbow, all the way.
I really hope to see you all out and about this week, enjoying the weather and soaking up this beautiful city!

Say Yes to Sugar, Sanity, Fun and Fear
It's getting chilly, things are getting creepy, and people are selling Christmas decorations. It must be Halloween! There are so many awesome things to do this month I don't know where to start, so I think I'll start with TONIGHT!
Asafapalooza is tonight and tomorrow night at Dougherty Arts Center, in my sweet 'hood of 78704. Asaf is one of my favorite always smiling super sweet amazingly brilliant funny people on the planet. ASAFAPALOOZA! is his two-day jam packed party to celebrate the 20 years of improv under his belt. If you can only make one show: Baxter & Bernard. Bring your tissues from tears of laughter.
After your laughter rush dissolves, get it going again with a FREE sugar rush from Sugar Mama's, again in the 78704. Man, my 'hood knows how to BRING IT. Anyway, if you haven't been to Sugar Mama's yet, I feel sorry for you. They are the best cupcake joint I've found in Austin, and believe me, I get around. So, get your fill this Sunday from 2-5 and enjoy cupcakes, TITO'S, champagne, beer, prizes, live music, and of course cupcakes, all for free! If you feel like bringin' them a birthday present, you'll be able to donate to Austin Pets Alive!
Austin Variety Show is a jam-packed variety show full of comedy, live music, burlesque, contests and you! Saturday, October 23rd, they will be taping an episode called "Helloween". Tickets are only $10, and you get $2 off with a costume. Doors and free food & drink start at 8pm and the spookiness begins at 9pm!
The 24th will be the calm before the Halloween storm. Stop by the Grand Reopening of Arthouse at the Jones Center to check out, well, the grand reopening! I've been watching them destruct and reconstruct this place for months now, and it looks smashing. Stroll around and enjoy free workshops, live music, the sweetest rooftop deck, and more! From 12pm-8pm.
When you're ready for crazy, it'll be there waiting for you. I hope you've all heard about the Rally to Restore Sanity/March to Keep Fear Alive hosted by Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert in Washington, DC on October 30th. Well, if you haven't, I'll be sure to report back, BECAUSE I'M GOING! But more importantly, there are satellite rallies here so that you can be involved in the fun too. There will be an Austin Satellite Rally to Restore Sanity from 11am-2pm on the Capitol steps. If you're more for fear, there will be an Austin Satellite Rally to Keep Fear Alive! It will start at Zilker Park at 9am with all kinds of stuff to prepare you for the march to the Capitol, like costume contests, dance parties, sign-making, and chant practicing. So dress up and instill fear in visitors and locals alike, and I'll keep it weird in DC!

Say Yes to smörgåsbord fiesta safaris of theatre
The time for Dysfunction is now. You guys saw Slag right? And you want to see True West, don'tcha? Well, tomorrow night is the night of the Dysfunction, so I hope you're ready. Because a dozen theater companies will showcase their talent, South Paw Jones will host, and a raffle with awesome local stuff will be waiting for you. So stop by The United States Art Authority, tomorrow at 7:30pm and drop a suggested $15-25 in the bucket so they can buy some toasters. For the play. FOR ART!
Tickets here.
Speaking of theater, don't forget to check out Free Night of Theater tomorrow at 11am to reserve your free tickets for improv and theater shows! I used mine last week to see RENT at Zach Theatre and I can't believe I saw it for nothing. The cast is talented, the show is powerful, and I got chills more than twice. I think this week I'll score free tickets to Drumline Live to rock out to and Vampyress to get in the mood for Halloween.
Enjoy!

Say Yes to Super Fun Super Free Entertainment!
Sorry guys! Day job, art school, real life, no time to Say Yes! What a drag! Been thinkin' about ya'll though, and hope everyone is keeping busy and enjoying this cool weather. I can't wait to bust out my boots!
In my minimal amount of free time I've been hittin' up some Improv as usual. Saturday night at The Hideout, it was the fourth week of Theatresports. Every show has teams hosted by our favorite local venues like Alamo Drafthouse or Cathedral of Junk. The first 30 audience members get hooked up with free stuff! It's a really fun and involving format, so check it out the next four Saturdays at The Hideout at 8pm! October 23rd is the All-Star Game and October 30th will be the Finals!
Tonight, I headed over to Hyde Park Theater to check out When Harry Met David, featuring J/K and Confidence Men who improvised in the style of Harry Pitner and David Mamet on the set of the incredible Vigil.
I keep seeing all this Improv and keep putting off trying Improv! I mean I know I gotta Say Yes, but I'm nervous! It should fit into my schedule this week, it's with the most amazing teachers, and it's free, so why not! So if you want to take a class with me, check out The Institution Theater and choose from four different dates this week! You can also check out a free Improv 101 class at Coldtowne Theater every first Monday at the month. If those dates don't work for you, The Hideout also offers free classes, with one coming up on Tuesday at 7pm!
Speaking of free, how about some free theater? Free Night of Theater is a jaw-dropping amazing concept. They have tickets to shows for the entire month of October. Just check out the site every Tuesday at 11am, and reserve tickets for shows that weekend. RENT! Port-a-potty Makeout Booth!

Free Fun and Pizza!
Yay, free fun this weekend.
This Saturday is the Seaholm District Music & Arts Fair at 3rd and Nueces. This is a free, earth and kid friendly event with live music, food, local austin shops, and art installations. Since we are in Austin, they will be broadcasting The Longhorns game on a 40' screen. It starts at noon and you can party on until 10pm.
Once you recover, take advantage of Free Museum Day on Sunday. There are over 30 museums to choose from, and if you attend at least 7, you can get a free pizza from Austin Pizza. (I like the Pesto A Go-Goat). I'm an Art major, so yeah, I'm excited. And hungry.
Mark your calendars for October 12th, for The Dysfunction, a two-hour smörgåsbord fiesta safari of Austin independent theatre at The United States Art Authority. It starts at 7:30, and well, it's going to be a fiesta safari of dysfunction, what else do you need to know?
If you need something to do tonight, here are your options, should you choose to accept them:
Free: Drag Show & Karaoke Revue at Ego's Bar. 8pm.
Cheap: The World Premiere of Baxter & Bernard at The Hideout Theatre at 8pm. $3. (This is where I will be)
Frankenstein: Frankenstein: The Trouble Puppet Show at Salvage Vanguard Theater. 8pm, $10-15. Playing through October 3rd.
Have fun kiddos!

Austin is still weird, and....sexy?
Even with awesome Austin places closing left and right, Austin is still a little weird.
For instance, Tim and Eric are stopping at The Paramount for their tour this year. If those guys aren't weird, I don't know what is. Tickets go on sale this Friday, they're $30, and the show is November 13th at 8pm. Great Job!
Did you know that there is a Unicycle Football League? Our team, Hell on Wheel, is the only team based in Austin and is currently recruiting. Currently, the games are played in San Marcos, but maybe as Austin gets more teams, we'll have a couple games here. I plan on making a day out of it sometime soon. There are two games this Sunday, one at 3pm and one at 5pm. Admission to all the games is free, BYOB is encouraged, and there's a half-time show with a clown. That's what life should be like.
To balance out your weirdness, but still stay a little quirky, check out the YOGASM 2010: Show Us Your Om Face, October 7th, 4pm, at Republic Square Park. Besides doing yoga outdoors for 90 minutes with a thousand of your closest friends, there will be live music, local art and food, free Kombucha, drum circles and hula hoops. After your yoga class at 6:30pm, stick around for MC Yogi's first ever Austin show, at 8:30pm. These yogis know how to party.
According to the latest issue of Men's Health, we are number one on the list of America's Hotbeds of Sex. Nothing like being the drunkest, weirdest, and sexiest people in the US! Good job city.
Well, I'm off to Terror Tuesday, one of my favorite local weirdfests.

Feast your eyes on Free
Last night I was busy becoming the Mayor of Hyde Park Theatre and seeing a preview of Vigil. Opening night is tonight. And let me tell you, you want to see this. Ken Webster and Lana Dieterich are quite the dynamic duo, and their performances blew me away. This play is touching, hilarious, lonely, quirky, fun, and undeniably human. Still don't believe me? Well, I happened to bring my camera just for you.
Vigil is playing at 8pm Thursday, Friday, and Saturday through October 9th. Pay what you can Thursday Nights! Otherwise, tickets are $17-$19. You're going tonight, right?
Ah, I love Austin theater. Seeing a show, milling around outside after, seeing the stars of the show ride off on their bicycles.
So, my pocketbook loves me lately. Free theater last night, free movie screening tonight. Alamo Drafthouse South is hosting a free screening of Catfish tonight at 7:30pm. And well, besides the fact that I love movies, especially free ones, this one is about social media, and Facebook in particular. And you guys know how I love that topic, right? Well, if you want to stuff your face with sweet buttery popcorn and watch the world wide webs unravel, there are still a few spaces left, and you can RSVP here.
Enjoy your adventures in Austin!

Free Day of Yoga Opening Festival
I started off my morning with a Pretty in Pink Smoothie from Whole Foods Market and then headed upstairs for the Free Day of Yoga Opening Festival.

At around 10:30, a variety of instructors led us through a meditation and mantra, breathing exercises, warm-ups, stretches, poses and a cool down and closing meditation. It was a great way to try out some new styles and poses and relax outdoors with my fellow yogis.
Don't forget, Free Day of Yoga kicks off tomorrow! There is a schedule on this website if you still need some ideas on where to go. I plan on taking a Bikram Yoga class, and trying out Ashtanga, because my yoga mom is excited about it!
Namaste!

90 minutes in Heaven

Yesterday, I let Courtney at Massage Harmony walk all over me. I had been stoked to get this type of massage since I bought a Groupon for a 90 minute massage at Massage Harmony. I went to the South location, but they also have a location off of Bee Caves. This massage blew my mind. I had no idea one person could do so much with their feet! The first hour was all feet to back, skin to skin contact. Yeah, you have to get completely undressed, but your glutes will thank you later. She used a deep pressure with me, and if you can handle it, I would recommend it. I still feel light as Jello today. For the last thirty minutes, I rolled over and got a pretty standard leg, arm, shoulder, and scalp massage. She found knots I didn't even know existed! Needless to say, I highly recommend Courtney at Massage Harmony and an Ashiatsu massage. If it's your first time at Massage Harmony, they have an introductory special for a 60 minute massage for $34. After that, hour long massages are only $44. On Labor Day they are offering $5 off your massage as well. And lucky you, Yoga Yoga is right next door, and they will be hosting their free day of yoga on Labor Day. Little yoga, little massage, little half-off shopping at Saver's.....yep, sounds like the perfect Monday. What would you do without me??
P.S. - I hope you all are enjoying the Out of Bounds festivities. I saw some fun sketch shows last night at Salvage Vanguard Theater, and tonight, I'm counting down the minutes until Confidence Men and Drum Machine at The Hideout, 7pm!

Why I Love This City
Witnessed on the patio of an Austin coffee shop, early one rainy morning:
Two girls eating and talking, with a bird cage full of paper origami birds at their table
A girl with two small dogs in her purse
A girl with a Yoda backpack, making it look like he's hanging on her shoulders
A woman breastfeeding and talking to her friend
Two girls praying over their food and sharing an omelet

Say Yes to what's left of Summer
Ok, ok, it's still hot outside. But we're getting there! Don't worry, I'm here to give you some sweet relief to get through another possibly sweaty, sticky, weekend.
Tonight, cool off on South Congress at Snack Bar with a BYOV (Bring your own vinyl) party. Waterloo Records is hosting a Lounge & Listen party tonight, to listen to The Weepies new album, Be My Thrill, and afterwards, spinning your records on the patio! But be careful about leaving your records in the car, cause it's vinyl, babe, it melts!
Robert Rodriguez's Machete, filmed here in Austin, is finally ready for our viewing pleasure! I had fun watching these boys film in my hotel, alley way, and near the capitol, and I look forward to seeing those spots in the film! The Paramount will be showing Machete, this Thursday, September 2nd at 8pm. But get there early to check out the red carpet arrivals. Tickets include entrance into the stunt-filled after party at Austin Studios.
Still sweatin' this heat stuff? The Four Seasons is helping you cool down with dive-in movies. The event and popcorn are free! There will be movie-themed drink specials and a delicious candy bar. Can you say sweet end of summer fun for all ages? The next movie up is The Blind Side and it's this Friday, September 3rd, and here's the rest of the line-up for ya!
Sunday, September 5: Transformers 2
Friday, September 24: Night at the Museum 2
Friday, October 8: Iron Man 2
Friday, October 22: Clash of the Titans
So, have fun out there kids, and stay cool. Don't forget about all the air-conditioned improv that Out of Bounds is bringing this week!

TGIF.
Thank God It's Fall. I was getting sick of sweating when going to check the mail or pay the meter. Hello sweet breezes!
It's Sunday again! Time to head to The Highball for a 50's themed night of improv featuring The Andersons, Confidence Men, and the amazing vocals of Nathalie Holmes aka Gin Joint. This girl blew me away last time, singing sweet jazzy covers of Lady Gaga, Coldplay, and more. This jam-packed show is only $5 and starts at 8pm tonight!
Don't forget to buy some tickets to Out of Bounds, coming up this week!

Say Yes to Salsa, Sweat and Savers!
September 6th is going to make you sweat. You've heard me talking, or uh, typing, about Bikram Yoga, and if you'd like, you can try it for free with me. Yogagroove is hosting a free day of yoga on September 6th, with classes from 6am-6pm. In addition to free yoga, enjoy live music, italian ices, a clothing trunk sale, and discounted services and clothing from Yogagroove. Don't be scared of a little sweat! But, if you are, just check out Austin Free Day of Yoga for some less-sweaty alternatives.
September 6th is going to help you save. My favorite thrift store, Saver's is having another half-off sale, September 6th, from 7am-9pm. I go to every one of these and stock up on clothes for every season until the next sale. I never have to shop anywhere else! You know, except for socks and underwear.
Every Friday, you can salsa dance at Austin Sports Tavern (2200 S.I H 35
Austin, TX). Start out with a free lesson at 9:30, and then show off your new moves until 2am! Ladies get in free all night and manly men have to cough up $8.
Yay for free and cheap activities!

Music, Movies, and More!
Yes, I still love the theater. The Zach Theatre has some awesome plays going on now and coming up soon. The Drowsy Chaperone is in its final two weeks, and while I got sick the night I was going to see it, my friends went and said it was GREAT! I'm going to try to catch it before its ends on August 29th. Also showing is Metamorphoses, which is a story about Greek Myths. It contains brief male nudity and a splash zone, how awesome is that? And now, what you've all been waiting for, RENT! It starts September 16th and ends November 28th. Tickets are on sale now, but only by phone. I heard through a reliable source at The Zach Theatre that the play will be set in Austin as opposed to New York. I'm both excited and skeptical (which is awesome, because it's amazing when I'm proved wrong) to see this idea! I'm a little afraid of how loud I'll be singing when "Light My Candle" comes on, though. Haha!
I also like theater of the movie type! Therefore, I especially like The Drafthouse and their engaging movie concoctions. While my cup is still not brimming with booze, I'm interested to see AV Geeks: Alcohol Is Dynamite, this Tuesday at 7pm. AV Geeks is essentially this guy, Skip, who creates shows out of old 16mm videos. If you dig it, he's doing it again, except this time it's Your Prom Date and it's at The Highball, August 26th at 7pm. Stick around after the show for a real prom. I have just the dress for this too! I love seeing old movies on the big screen and eating bags of candy while I quote every word. And this Thursday, it will be socially acceptable! Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory Quote-Along at The Drafthouse. It's playing the next three Thursdays at 7pm.
Hey, remember how we are in the live musical capitol of the world? Well, if you forgot, here are some reminders. One of my favorite music magazines, Paste Magazine is hosting its first ever tour, and it kicks off in Austin. Tickets are available now through pre-sale, and will get you a free digital subscription to Paste. The show is October 12th at The Mohawk. A few days later, Sufjan Stevens will be in town! Check him out on October 19th at 8pm at The Long Center. Tickets are $30.

Do you love Improv?
Yes? Good.
My favorite confident men will be playing two Sundays in a row at The Highball. This should be pretty boss, considering you get to witness an hour of The Andersons, Confidence Men, and Gin Joint (a sweet jazz duo), set in a 1950's theme for only $5. So, check them out TODAY and next Sunday, at The Highball at 8pm! I've got just the dress for this!
Also, I made my OOB schedule, and here it is so far:
Tuesday 8/31:
The opening party at the Continental Club, 10pm.
Wednesday 9/1:
I pick up the lovely girls from Rosa Parks Improv and show them around my favorite city. The first night of shows are on two stages at Salvage Vanguard Theater, or SVT. I'll be sitting in on the Apples Stage to watch Midnight Society, Dusk (Improvised Tween Erotica), Snackers, and You're Not My Real Dad.
Thursday 9/2:
This is a tough one! If you're at SVT, check out Available Cupholders & Switch (the group I wouldn't stop raving about last month) at 9:30pm on the Apples Stage. Then, head over to the Oranges Stage and check out Two Fun Men (from NY) and Austin Secrets. If you're downtown, you can check out Your Terrific Neighbors at 7:30pm and Hitchcocked! at 9pm at The Hideout. Shows will also be going on at Coldtowne Theater and once you pay $5, you're in for as long as you'd like! If you're more into stand-up, check out The Velveeta Room.
Friday 9/3:
Parallelogramophonograph (or Pgraph) and an All-Star Maestro starting at 9pm at SVT. Girls Girls Girls will be playing The Hideout at about the same time if you're into improvised musicals, and who isn't?! Then, head home and take a nap to get geared up for Happiness is a Choice at 1am at Coldtowne Theater. I can't wait to see what these boys are up to now!
Saturday 9/4:
At 5pm, I'm going to check out Rosa Parks Improv at Coldtowne Theater. Then, I'm heading over to The Hideout for Confidence Men and Kind Strangers: Improvised Tennessee Williams and sticking around for Drum Machine (you have to see it!)
There are a few shows going on Sunday & Monday, but I might be worn out by then. I'll let you know! Again, here is the link to Out Of Bounds and the venues, Salvage Vanguard Theater, Coldtowne Theater, The Hideout, and The Velveeta Room.

Sad, Happy, Funny, Oh My!
I used my Groupon at How Do You Roll? the other day.
How Do You Roll? gives you the chance to play God! Choose your wrap, meat, vegetables (or fruit!), and your topping. Apparently, there are 37 million possibilities. I went with some tofu skin, avocado, pineapple, and tuna. And a Philly roll. And a Slammin' Salmon roll. I REALLY LIKE SUSHI, OKAY??
Service was incredible, the guys there were really nice. I got all of that for $20 bucks, so that's not bad! It was tasty and quick and fun. I'll be back soon.
I also went to Black Swan Yoga, which is on W. 5th St. This place is cool because it's all by donation. You show up to a class of your choice (there are a TON), and pay after class by dropping cash in the donation box or by swiping your credit card on one of the two available computers. They also offer mat and towel rentals for $2, have a fridge of cold beverages, and showers. The suggested donation is $10-$15, but if you can't make that, there's no pressure because you make the donation on your own and not to the instructor. I usually do Bikram Yoga, yeah, that's right, I live and play in the heat and then go work out in it, but I was looking for something a little less hot. I took the Vinyasa class, which is suggested for beginners, and it was nice. I broke a sweat, got to breathe, and clear my mind. All classes are about an hour long, and they start as early as 6am and keep going till 8:30pm! I'm definitely excited to go back. Maybe even today!
In less happy news, The Dobie Theatre is closing its doors this Sunday. I'm ashamed to say I only had the opportunity to experience this wonderful place once. However, I will be going tonight, to say goodbye and watch The Kids Are All Right. If you get a chance, see a movie there this weekend!
In funnier news, Out of Bounds is coming! What? You've never heard of it? Well, keep reading! Out of Bounds is a comedy festival that Austin hosts every year. From improv, to stand-up, to film and sketch, this is going to be one action packed week. It starts Aug. 31st and ends Sep. 6th, and happens at all of our lovely improv venues across the city. I have two suggestions for you, but I'll be back with more. Confidence Men at 7pm at The Hideout Theatre, and Happiness is a Choice at 1:30am at Coldtowne Theater. My two favorite troupes in the same night? I'm already shaking with excitement. Kevin McDonald from Kids in the Hall will also be there if tickets are still available!
Well, I have to get back to my day job now, but stay cool and check back for updates!

Say Yes to Sobriety!
I'm taking a break from the booze. Don't worry youngins, soon enough I'll be off the sobriety streak and back with less-than-sober shenanigan stories to share! But in the meantime, my liquor-free challenge will give me the opportunity to explore new avenues in entertainment and liquid adventure. I'm thinking refreshing summer sippers like Bouldin Creek Cafe's Rose Lemonade or Summermoon Cafe's Wintermoon Latte. I'm thinking about hoppin' on the frozen yogurt trend, I'm thinking about getting a frozen banana at Banarchy, I'm thinking about the Boston Cream Pie Snowcone at Casey's, etc, etc! What's everyone's favorite virgin summer-time concoction or treat?
I'm also excited to discover fun summer-time places and things that keep my mind off that sweet, sweet Tito. I'm thinking more art museums, more theater, more yoga!, more parks and greenbelts, and some putt-putt at Peter Pan. Anybody have any superb ideas for alcohol-free activities?
Until next time, keep it Sober, keep it Safe.

Melancholic Happiness
Holy Emotion Austin Enthusiasts!
There are five shows left, and I am positively seeing it again next week. You can see it this Thursday-Saturday at 8pm and Sunday at 5pm. Stick around after the show at meet the actors, because they are all very sweet and lovable! I spoke to "Tilly" after the show, and she was excited about my tattoo and offered to e-mail me the other words she described in the play. "Joan" also ran after me before I left to officially introduce herself and personally thank me for coming to the show. So please support these amazingly talented people and enjoy some theater! You won't leave feeling melancholy.

Now, onto the happiness. Happiness is a choice! Happiness Is A Choice is my favorite group of on-stage experimenters. I see a lot of improv, and Happiness is a Choice is a fresh breath of air in a sea of assigned formats. It's a calming experience watching these brilliant men think out loud, perform random handstands, wear the color of happiness on their sleeves, and perform experiments. They are scientists, and they are performing TONIGHT, 8:30pm at Coldtowne Theater, for free! Every Monday night Coldtowne Theater brings you Monday Night Mash, a night of three improv troupes for the low, low cost of free. BYOB!
Dear Austin, you are awesome.
I saw Melancholy Play at Austin Playhouse Friday night. I can't stop thinking about it because it blew my mind. It was incredibly touching, fun, well-acted, and surprisingly personal. When I heard about this play I was immediately interested simply because of the title. Such an interesting emotion, and choice of words, melancholy. I sat down in the front row so I wouldn't miss a beat. The main character, Tilly, is adorable and intriguing. Lorenzo, her therapist, is incredibly passionate and intense. Her boyfriend, Frank, is a bit shy, quiet, and unknowingly missing a part of himself. Her hairdresser, Frances is perky, excited, and full of emotion. Her friend, Joan, is stubborn at first, but then easily melts at Tilly's innocence. The monologues and human emotions are easy to relate to, but I was taken by surprise when Tilly began to describe a certain word in a different language, because that word is tattooed on my arm. It's a hard word to describe, but the writing of the play and the dialogue captured it so well. So needless to say, I especially identified with this play and her character.

Fanny Packs and Free Kittens!
It's Friday! It's 90 degrees! There are a million things to do this weekend, so get ready.
Now, technically, you can attend all three of these events. Go for it!
Start out with a little Austin Growers Guild Mixer at Houndstooth Coffee, tonight from 5-8. Network with other growers and gardeners and learn how to grow your own veggies! One day I'll have a yard!
From 8-10pm tonight at Opal Divine's 6th St. location, there will be a Fanny Packin' Scavenger Hunt! Bring a team of 3 and your fanny packs!
If you're more in the mood for some interesting improv, and I know you are, stop in at Hyde Park Theatre for Alone Together, a first-ever solo improv showcase under the direction of my all-time favorite visiting improviser, Jill Bernard. Show is at 10:30, and ends with a special performance of Drum Machine. If you haven't seen Jill perform yet, this is your last chance. Tickets are only 5 dollars. $5 dollars to have your mind BLOWN? You gotta Say Yes. Circle Mirror Transformation is tonight at 8pm, before Alone Together, so just make a night of it!
I'm still on a theater kick, and there are still shows to see!
The Virgin w/ 10,000 Arrows and Melancholy Play both happen tonight at 8pm at Austin Playhouse. Tickets are $12-15. Annie at Zilker Park is still going strong, now in it's fourth week. The show is free ($3 to park), and starts at 8:30pm.
Start Saturday off with some free kittens! The Austin Human Society is holding its first ever free cat adoption event. Stop in between 12-7 and pick up a new kitten!
The Sol & Luna Art & Music Festival is also happening on Saturday. This will be an all-day happenin', with live music, art, and interaction. 11am-11:30pm at Cherrywood Coffee House.
Late, late, late Saturday night come dance and drink at a bridge party! Starting at 1am, Wolf Teeth, Steady Breaks, Hot Britches, will rock out on the South Lamar Pedestrian Bridge. I've heard about these happenings for a while, and look forward to seeing it in action!
On Sunday, partake in, or simply witness the Keep Austin Breastfeeding Flash Mob at Barton Springs. If you want to partake, the last rehearsal is Saturday! The mob will happen around 1pm. There's nothing like Austin randomness.
While you're in South Austin, come say "hi" to me at The 04 Lounge. They are turning two! Free food & beer while it lasts, live music at 10pm, and of course, a dance party till closing time.
I think I'll be pretty exhausted after this action-packed weekend, but I'll try to keep ya posted. Stay hydrated and don't get too excited!

The weekend! Already? Yes!
Choices, choices, choices. Whatcha gonna do tonight?
The Spectacle at the Hideout at 10? Pgraph and Confidence Men? I think so.
If you miss Confidence Men tonight, check them out after Circle Mirror Transformation at Hyde Park Theatre. A ticket to the play gets you into the CF Men show free! Circle Mirror at 8, Confidence Men at 10:30.
If you feel like bouncing, head over to Scoot Inn for Space Odyssey, tonight at 9. There will be a triple-headed DJ set, a light show, and more importantly, a MOONBOUNCE!
GREASE Sing-a-long at Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar? Tonight at 7:15! I'll be attending next week, for sure.
If you're near campus, head over to the United States Art Authority for Viva Variety! Tons of awesomeness in the form of Burlesque, Comedy, Mime, and Live Music. Why not? $5 with a costume or creative offering, $8 without.
Just want to drink? You should stop by Jaime's for some margaritas before they close for good. Mi Casa Cantina also has drink specials till 11. $0.50 cent wells! I'll accept my thank you in the form of a drunk dial.
Have fun kiddos!

Local News, Hello/Goodbye City
If you haven't heard already, Katz's is closing. He is looking for a new location, perhaps outside of downtown.
The University of Texas has released H2Orange, a purified bottle of water shaped like the UT Tower. A large portion of proceeds will go towards scholarship funding. Environmental activists have shown concern about the bottle in regards to Austin’s Zero Waste goal and the campus’ sustainability policy.

Say Yes - Rain or Shine!
Blues on the Green last night!
Tito-tasting tonight!
If you didn't RSVP or can't get in, I'd like to suggest some other awesome happenings that make me wish I had a clone to attend them. Our very own Austin Kleon will be at The Austin Museum of Art at 6:30pm tonight. Sure, he'll talk about his new book, but you'll also get to make some blackout poetry yourself. I've gotta tell you, it's addicting and fun.
While you're downtown, head over to The Hideout after the talk, and enjoy The Threefer. $3 for 3 acts. The show starts at 8pm.
If it decides to stop raining, and you'd rather drink margaritas and listen to live music while relaxing in a pool, then Live on the Lake is for you. Micky and the Motorcars are playing tonight, with The Orbans as an after party act. Admission is only $5, and doors are at 7pm. Be sure to get there early, because they deny entrance once they reach capacity. This is one of my favorite summer events in Austin, don't miss it!

Say Yes to the City!
In my Say Yes Adventures, I've re-discovered how much I love the theater. I've been seeing plays left and right, and there is something so organic and refreshing about it. It's a breath of fresh air from eating out, bar-hopping, and seeing movies. I recently saw Bug, Becky's New Car , and Shakespeare in the Park. Now I'm looking forward to Annie, starting July 9th, and Slag, starting July 10th.
Meanwhile, to hold me over, I've been enjoying tons and tons of improv. Tonight, I had the option between Dusk (which I highly recommend, even if you don't read tween vampire erotica) at SVT, or Nightmare Video Project and Drum Machine. at the Hideout. Jill is visiting from Minneapolis, and after seeing her just once last week, I fell in love! She is a master, a genius, and a talented, beautiful woman! I promise that she will blow your mind with her one-woman improvised musical act, Drum Machine. Plus, one of my favorite improvisers in town, Jeff Britt, will be performing with Nightmare Video Project. Tickets are only $6. I'll be the one rolling on the floor laughing!

Tex-mex & Tito-Tasting? Yes, please.
I miss Minneapolis already, but all the upcoming activity in Austin has got me pumped!
If you haven't figured out what to do on the 4th yet, I've got a great link here for you. Do512 has everything covered, so I'll leave it up to you to choose your own adventure!
After a few days of recovery, jump back in it and head to one of my favorite tex-mex restaurants, Matt's(famous)El Rancho for their 58th anniversary party! The party runs from 6-8pm on July 7th. Enjoy drink specials, live music, and mingle on the newly expanded patio.
Please tell me you are already an official Tito's taster! Well, if you aren't, you will be soon. Tito is hosting a party at Gibson Showroom, 3601 South Congress Avenue Suite G400, on July 8th. Along with delicious cocktails, Matt King and 11 Bones will be performing an original show that you inspire. Submit a word or phrase into a hat, and they'll pick a few and go from there. Party starts at 6pm, a suggested donation of $10 and an RSVP gets you in: RSVP to rsvp@titosvodka.com and please be sure to include your full name, if you’re bringing a +1, and put ‘AUSTIN’ in the subject line.
I'll be back with more Austin-packed action!

A Week's Worth of Saying Yes
I'm headed off to Minneapolis this week, but in the meantime, I'll leave you with a few ways to enjoy the city while I'm gone.
You want to hear some live music? Of course you do. Today, Two Tons of Steel plays in Scholz's Beer Garten at 7:30pm. Check Scholz's out every Wednesday for a new band and brew. Some other options include Carolyn Wonderland at Blues on the Green, or the KVET Free Texas Music Series at Hill's Cafe.
This Thursday drink up with the TIKKR Pub Crawl. The crawl starts at Dirty Bill's (my favorite 6th street bar), at 8pm. Show up with a TIKKR watch and get your drinks for free.
I'd usually recommend Sunset Supper & Cinema at Whole Foods on Friday, but it has been postponed, so stay tuned! So instead, go check out a show at the Hideout Theatre.
If you're not too exhausted by Sunday, enjoy some Austin adventure on your bike for the Urban Assault Ride. If you are too exhausted, well, just sit back and people-watch. That's the beauty of Austin!
I'll try to keep you updated from the road, but if not, enjoy Austin (I already miss Kick Butt Coffee, Barton Springs, and Jalopy). See you soon!

Daniel Johnston's Only Show in 2010

Daniel Johnston will be playing his only Austin performance of 2010, tomorrow night at the Mohawk. Other local acts include Jason Falkner, Bracket & Co., Sour Notes, and Matt Bearden. This is an all-ages show, and will cost you $12-$15. Don't miss it!
Say Yes to Sunset Supper & Cinema
Oh, Summer. What a Say Yes Summer! It's a scorcher out there, but cool off tonight with Blazing Saddles on the rooftop plaza of Whole Foods on 6th and Lamar. Sunset Supper & Cinema is bringing you a movie and three-course themed menu, with vegetarian options, every Friday. Seating starts at 7:30, but try to get there a bit early to snag a seat.
You gotta see it to believe it, but the experience is remarkable every time.

Feels like an Emo's Week
I got my ticket to MewithoutYou at Emo's the day they went on sale, and the show has finally arrived tonight! MC Chris is playing tomorrow, who I've seen before and highly recommend seeing. I wasn't going to go, but since I found out MC Lars is also performing, and they have a great/funny song together that I love and play for everyone, I've decided to do the Emo's thing two nights in a row. So if you love live music and are free the next couple of nights, come join me in the mosh pit or the big nerd-rap group hug.
Thursday night, I plan on seeing Bug at Hyde Park Theatre. It's about crack, comes highly recommended by my theater buff friends, and Thursday night happens to be pay-what-you-want. I'll see ya there at 8pm.

Theater, Sock-Hop and Say Yes, Oh My!
I know, it's been forever. I had an out of town guest stay with me for a week, and I nearly exploded from all the excitement of showing him Austin for the first time. He thoroughly enjoyed it and hopes to move here one day! It was amazing being able to re-discover the things I love, and discover new things about the city. Over the course of the week, we said YES to: Toy Joy, Spiderhouse, Barton Springs, Improv at the Hideout Theatre, Clem Snide at Mohawk, random photo shoots in fields, impromptu dance parties in parking lots, Town Lake/Butler Park, Bouldin Creek Cafe, Gourdough's, Summermoon Cafe, Shakespeare in the Park, Crave Sushi, Silhouette, Casey's Snowballs (twice!), Polvo's, hanging out with random strangers in their home, Exquisite Zombie meet-up, Swing Dancing, Jalopy, Whataburger (he had never been), Magnolia, 360 Bridge (a first for me!), and literally, if there was anything else, I'm surprised we didn't explode! But I'm back now, with a new energy and enthusiasm, to tell you where to be and when!
Avoid the Rot Rally rush and attend some theater tonight!
Tonight, I'd recommend catching the last show of 69 Love Scenes at Salvage Vanguard Theater. It's at 8pm tonight and $5-10 dollars. It's loosely based on the Magnetic Fields album, 69 Love Songs. Enjoy!
Also on a theater note, Zilker Hillside Theatre is putting on "Pop's Concert in the Park" tonight at 8pm. Admission is free and the setting is family friendly. Annie will be coming to this theater in July, so stay tuned for updates!
You'll want to take it easy tonight anyway, so you can Say Yes to the Second Sunday Sock-Hop at Shangri-La. This one is super-special, because they are turning 4! Dancing starts at 9pm, but get there early and snag a free mix CD. Bring $5 to get in, and don't forget your dancing shoes.

Say Yes Saturday
Uno de Mayo promises to be an action-packed day in Austin, Texas.
I'm pretty excited about the Citysolve Urban Race that begins at 11am at Aussie's. I've already bought my ticket, I just need to assemble a team. Anybody wanna play?
After I crush the competition in the city-wide scavenger hunt and take a nap, I'm going to head over to Cheer Up Charlie's at 7pm for Zombies On the Horizon. Improv, live music, comedy, film, art, and yes, beer! The fun lasts until 1am, and the proceeds will help my good friend produce his Austin-based short film, "When You Reach September". I am an extra in the bus scene, so donate some money so you can see my incredible acting skills!

Live Music Season!
It's officially short weather in here in Austin, and more importantly, live music weather!
On Wednesdays you should head over to Hill's Cafe for their Free Texas Music Series. Every Wednesday at 6pm until September 29th!
On Thursdays, stop by Shady Grove for the 17th season of Unplugged at the Grove. Music starts at 8pm, but I recommend you get there early to snag yourself a seat or set up a blanket on the lawn. I've been really itching to go these past two weeks, but haven't made it out yet due to the rain. I'm hoping this Thursday things are different, because Ray Wylie Hubbard is playing and he never disappoints. Enjoy drink specials, delicious food, and a new band every week until September 30th.
If you're in the Downtown area on Thursdays, you can check out Jo's Downtown Music On The Patio. Enjoy live music and beer specials all night, starting at 7pm and continuing every Thursday in April and May! I look forward to heading over here sometime soon. Jo's reminds me of happy, simple times.
Another live music event I'm excited about attending for the first time is Blues on the Green. Now in their 20th year, Blues on the Green kicks off in June at Zilker Park. I'll post details about the opening show when I get them.
Hope to see you out there!
