Uno de Mayo promises to be an action-packed day in Austin, Texas.
I'm pretty excited about the Citysolve Urban Race that begins at 11am at Aussie's. I've already bought my ticket, I just need to assemble a team. Anybody wanna play?
After I crush the competition in the city-wide scavenger hunt and take a nap, I'm going to head over to Cheer Up Charlie's at 7pm for Zombies On the Horizon. Improv, live music, comedy, film, art, and yes, beer! The fun lasts until 1am, and the proceeds will help my good friend produce his Austin-based short film, "When You Reach September". I am an extra in the bus scene, so donate some money so you can see my incredible acting skills!

Live Music Season!
It's officially short weather in here in Austin, and more importantly, live music weather!
On Wednesdays you should head over to Hill's Cafe for their Free Texas Music Series. Every Wednesday at 6pm until September 29th!
On Thursdays, stop by Shady Grove for the 17th season of Unplugged at the Grove. Music starts at 8pm, but I recommend you get there early to snag yourself a seat or set up a blanket on the lawn. I've been really itching to go these past two weeks, but haven't made it out yet due to the rain. I'm hoping this Thursday things are different, because Ray Wylie Hubbard is playing and he never disappoints. Enjoy drink specials, delicious food, and a new band every week until September 30th.
If you're in the Downtown area on Thursdays, you can check out Jo's Downtown Music On The Patio. Enjoy live music and beer specials all night, starting at 7pm and continuing every Thursday in April and May! I look forward to heading over here sometime soon. Jo's reminds me of happy, simple times.
Another live music event I'm excited about attending for the first time is Blues on the Green. Now in their 20th year, Blues on the Green kicks off in June at Zilker Park. I'll post details about the opening show when I get them.
Hope to see you out there!

Vegan Week!
It's Vegan Week here at Say Yes Austin, and I've been sampling some of the local vegan/vegetarian restaurants around town. As a on & off again vegetarian for 10 years, I am kicking myself for not trying these places before. There is an infinite list of places to try in this town and it's so hard to pick and choose!
My first real vegan meal was at Mother's. I nearly got down on my knees and kissed the ground when I was here. The entire menu is vegetarian, and most of the items can be made vegan. It's a small point, but, I'm kind of a water snob, and even though Austin has some of the cleanest tap water in the US, I still feel icky when I order water in a restaurant. But Mother's? They only serve and cook with purified water. I was so happy it was ridiculous. Moving On! The interior is super cute, with Christmas lights and random works of art lining the walls, and a calming fountain in the back dining area. I ordered the Artichoke Enchiladas and K had the Enchiladas Verdes. I got mine with a delectable scoop of super fresh, super tasty guacamole on top.
I wanted to save room for dessert, but I couldn't. I really can't wait to go back and try EVERYTHING!

Next, M took me to Casa De Luz. Casa is a cute little community tucked away near Lamar and Barton Springs. The menu changes daily, so you'll never get bored. We sat outside and enjoyed listening to the kids playing and READING during recess.

You pay at the counter and they give you little coins. You can place the coins at your table and they will bring you the meal, or you can hand them to the person behind the counter and get your meal there. While you're waiting, you can help yourself to the soup and salad of the day. They brought out our food and it was really tasty, and COLORFUL! You can even get a second serving!

Dessert is separate, and they had a lot of options. It was hard to choose! I can't wait to go back again. I would really love to go daily! The concept is wonderful, the people were friendly, the food was light and refreshing. Definitely a WINNER!
Next we tried Veggie Heaven on the drag. I had been in before but never eaten there. We had a Steam Bun, the Protein 2000, and the Tangerine Mushroom. Me and M ended up switching, because I liked the Tangerine Mushroom more. It was vegan, but it tasted so much like chicken! The whole menu is pretty vegan friendly, and definitely vegetarian friendly. It's mostly a Chinese/Asian influenced menu, but they also offer quesadillas. It's a great little place to grab a quick bite, a bubble tea, and people watch.
I've already been a fan of Bouldin Creek for a while now, but I haven't had the tofu in a while. I ate a vegan breakfast here twice this week. I had a tofu omelet, and it was a little too spicy/seasoned for me. But when I got the tofu breakfast tacos, it was easier for my taste buds to handle. My taste buds are a little sensitive, though. I do dig their vegan cookies.
Let's talk about coffee! I've recently become a latte girl, and for vegan week I switched to soy milk in my coffee. I gotta tell ya, I'm probably never going back to regular milk. M introduced me to almond milk and rice milk and they are equally as great! The Coffee Bean has a really great almond milk mocha, but I'm still on the hunt for a better one, since the place is a little too corporate feeling for me. M and I are at Spiderhouse right now and we just had some soy milk mochas, and holy espresso batman, they are t-a-s-t-y.
So, Vegan Week has turned into Vegan Weeks. I'm on week three now. I really thought that it would be harder to do, but it has been so easy to stay vegan. When I eat, I feel light and refreshed. I'm not constantly starving, I have lots of energy, I feel great. It feels so wonderful, I'm going to keep going for as long as I can. I did start to get some cravings for seafood, but they've gone away now. I think I'll end up eating vegan as much as possible from now on though. We'll see!

Austin Art Week!
Austin Art Week begins April 21st, which includes Art City Austin and the Fusebox Festival. The highlight of Fusebox for me, is usually seeing Reggie Watts, but he's not playing this year. Though he is opening for Conan O'Brien in May.
So far, here's what I'm pumped about:
Magda Sayeg of Knitta Please will be covering our city in yarn! Check it out around the 2nd St. District all week.
T is For: Two hundred two-steppers on the steps of the Texas Capitol, April 21st, 6:30pm. This is exactly what it sounds like. Free BBQ from Stubb's, and Two-Steppin'!
Blender Love. If you know me, you know I'm obsessed with the relationship between human and telephone. This is going to be a modern day séance for cell phones. It's going to be interactive and involve live cinema. It sounds great. I can't wait! Off Center, April 22nd-24th, 7-10pm
A Western
It is an experiment with the relationship between an audience and an event, a re-imagining of everyday landscapes that helps uncover the beauty that already exists in the actual environments we inhabit.
April 23rd, 8pm, April 24th, 7pm, Historic Victory Grill. Tickets are $12-$18.
Quest for the West
Again, if you know me, you know I love scavenger hunts. It starts on April 24th, at the Off Center at 10am. Following that, there will be daily tasks to download, complete, and upload. A final product will be presented in the Fall!
Your Secrets Aren't Safe With Us
This is another event that needs your participation. They will be holding ten minute interviews, selecting a few finalists and a new work will be created!
April 24th-25th, Salvage Vanguard Theater, 11am-7pm.
One Swallow Doesn't Make A Summer
This is a window installation going on now on 2nd St., and will change on April 12th. There will be a couple of walking tours and a Lunch Hour tour as well.
Exquisite Bee The Exquisite Bee will provide props, costumes, the camera and set, and you bring the story! You can sign up alone or with a group, and it's free! The premiere will be on May 1st at 7:30pm.
The United States Art Authority, April 25th, 1-8pm.
Texan
Texan is a site specific poem constructed of text, paper, 1 million newspapers, a crop duster, a taxi cab, the geographical expanse of the state of Texas and twin brothers. The poem’s ending will reside in the twin brothers’ bodies for 7 years and then disappear.
April 25th, 7:30, Location TBD
Everytime I See Your Picture I Cry
This is a story of a garbage man who creates an independent phone book that chronicles the lives of each person in the city, but doesn't know a deranged killer is trailing him and killing each person he includes in his book. It sounds incredible.
April 25th, The Off Center, 8-9pm, Tickets are $12-$18.
Weetube
The performers will watch YouTube videos with the audience and then make a performance based on the publicly posted comments. I'm not sure about the location on this one, but will post it when I figure it out. It sounds fun!
April 30th-May 1st, 8pm-11pm
So, that's my Fusebox/Art Week List so far...stay tuned!

McCormick & Schmick's
I promise a re-cap of SXSW is coming soon, it's just hard to decide what to post when I took over 1000 pictures that week.
But for now, a fun event at McCormick & Schmick's that I heard about on Divagirl Deals. On April 15th, Tax Day, get a free $10.40 voucher and enjoy dinner and drink specials! More info here.
